What is Mentoring?

Mentoring has a long and distinguished history and is a widely used tool to support learning and development. For further information about the history of mentoring please see the 'What is Mentoring?' document.

Who is Mentoring For?

It is University policy that all new staff are appointed a mentor for the duration of their probationary period. However it is acknowledged that for certain groups of staff it may not be appropriate to appoint a formal 'mentor'. It may be more relevant to identify an experienced colleague to provide practical support and guidance to the new staff member in their day-to-day operational duties. The responsibility for assigning and managing the mentoring relationship is usually the head of school/unit or designated other. Mentors should be assigned prior to commencement of work and should be introduced to the new member of staff within the first week of work.
