Education Development Unit

Staff Appraisal and Development Scheme

Purpose of the Scheme

The University has agreed that the purpose of its Staff Appraisal and Development Scheme is:

To improve staff performance and develop potential in the context of the achievement of institutional, faculty and departmental development plans, thereby improving the efficiency with which the University as a whole is managed.

The focus of the Scheme is the annual appraisal interview that each member of staff is asked to attend. The whole appraisal is designed to be a two-way process and part of an ongoing dialogue between the appraiser and appraisee throughout the year.

Eligibility

The Scheme covers all staff, with the exception of staff on temporary/fixed term contracts of less than a year.

Confidentiality

All discussion during the appraisal interview will remain confidential to the appraiser and appraisee. A summary of the agreed priority tasks that involve either other staff or the department as a whole will be produced so that all members of staff are clear about their respective responsibilities. Issues of a personal nature will remain confidential.

Time-Scale

The appraisal scheme runs on a yearly cycle, with appraisal interviews taking place during the period May to August. Appraisal interviews for contract research staff should take place early on during the contract period and then continue on an annual basis.

Training for appraisers and appraisees

Training is provided through the Staff Development Programme. Details of the online pack which forms Part 1 of the appraiser training can be on the Flexible and Online Learning web pages.

Preparation forms and guidelines can be downloaded from the Personnel Document Finder
