RSS can help you check blogs and other dynamic web sites easily?

The World Wide Web is a vast collection of multimedia resources of variable quality.  When you find a good site, it would be useful to know when new resources are added.  Many site publishers provide a feed of changes.  You just need to invest a little time in learning how to use RSS (Really Simple Syndication), in order to keep track of changing resources.  You don’t need to go and look for changes - you can let them come to you ;-)

Watch this Common Craft video see what is RSS and how it can make it possible for you to manage the checking of dynamic resources on the Internet.

If you prefer a wordy explanation, check out the BBC site at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/help/rss/3223484.stm .

If that has made you want to get started with RSS, then get yourself an RSS reader (Google reader might be good choice) and get started. You can even use my feed (spot the orange button at top right of this page) as your first test, as it’s right here on this page. Once you recognise the orange buttons, you will see them everywhere, 21st century ticker tape.

If you want to use the Common Craft RSS video in lectures or on Blackboard, please contact the Learning Technology Centre, who have purchased a licence for site use at Salford.  You can also check out the other Common Craft videos at youtube, or on the Blackboard pages (just click the Staff Resources tab, when you are logged in to Blackboard).
